El programari lliure, tal com el defineix la Fundació de Programari Lliure (Free software Foundation o FSF), és programari que es pot utilitzar, copiar, estudiar, modificar i redistribuir amb poca o cap restricció. La manera usual de distribuir programari com a programari lliure és concedint al receptor una llicència de software lliure (o cedint-lo al domini públic) i posant a disposició el codi font.

Per hardware open-source o maquinari lliure ens referim al maquinari de l'ordinador, o element electrònic, que està dissenyat d'una manera similar al software lliure. El maquinari de font oberta és part de la cultura open-sourceque adopta la idea de font oberta més enllà del software.
