GERMINADOR wiki:Multilingüe
The main working language of this project is Catalan but contributions to the wiki in other languages are also welcome.
For public communication (presentation, spreading, partial reports, and final report) three languages are used: Catalan, Spanish and English.
Some devices have been created to grant their use:
- to connect a page with its translated version into the other languages
- to group the pages by the language they are written in
- to list the pages waiting to be translated
In order to do so we insert language identifiers in the titles and make use of mediawiki software "templates" to mark-up the pages.
Catalan is also the default language for the wiki interface. If you want to change it you can do it in preferences as a registered user.

Naming conventions
Titles in Catalan do not carry any linguistic identifier.
For example: Què és un wiki?
Titles in Spanish read "(es)" at the end of the title (separated from the last character by a space).
For example: ¿Qué es un wiki? (es)
Titles in English read "(en)" at the end of the title (separated from the last character by a space).
For example: What's a wiki? (en)
If there are other indicators the one about the language always comes at the end.
For example for a title in Catalan like: Wikipool, GPL per alliberar (G)
We will write the title in Spanish: Wikipool, GPL para liberar (G) (es)
Using templates – How to
Templates are pages that can be easily inserted within other pages. We use them in order to manage linguistic questions easily. Find below an explanation on how to use them. Codes to mark-up a language have to be found at the very beginning of the page, before any other text.
Linking pages to translations
If a page has already translations to the other two languages, we will use a template with parameters indicating the names of these pages. The name of the template is ca, es and en meaning that we are in the Catalan, Spanish and English version of the page, respectively. The parameters linkca, linkes and linken indicate the name of the pages to be linked to in their Catalan, Spanish and English version.
Please, follow the pattern below:
For a Catalan page: {{ca | linkes=NOMBRE | linken=NAME}}
(where NOMBRE and NAME should be replaced by the name of the page in each language).
- Example:
- {{ca | linkes=Wikipool (es) | linken=Wikipool (en)}}
For a Spanish page: {{es | linkca=NOM | linken=NAME}}
(where NOM and NAME should be replaced by the name of the page in each language).
- Example:
- {{es | linkca=Wikipool | linken=Wikipool (en)}}
For an English page: {{en | linkca=NOM | linkes=NOMBRE}}
(where NOM and NOMBRE should be replaced by the name of the page in each language).
- Example:
- {{en | linkca=Wikipool | linkes=Wikipool (es)}}
Apart from creating the link to their translated pages, these templates insert the article in a list (a category) of pages of the same language.
Page in only one language
A page that is written in only one language and is not meant to be translated, it is tagged differently.
- If in Catalan: {{nomes ca}}
- If in Spanish: {{solo es}}
- If in English: {{only en}}
These templates already list the page together with those in the same language and create a language identifier into the page.
Pages waiting to be translated
There are pages that in their writing or later are considered to be in need of a translation. We have created templates to show this.
- Waiting for Catalan > Spanish translation: {{ca es}}
- Waiting for Catalan > English translation: {{ca en}}
- Waiting for Spanish > Catalan translation: {{es ca}}
- Waiting for Spanish > English translation: {{es en}}
- Waiting for English > Catalan translation: {{en ca}}
- Waiting for English > Spanish translation: {{en es}}
These tags list the page together with those waiting to be translated and insert a text on the page itself indicating so.
Translation to be reviewed
You may have translated a page but you have doubts about the translation you have done. Or you have seen a page that is not properly translated or whose original version has changed and needs updating. We have also created templates to manage these cases. This way they are listed together with the pages to be reviewed.
Pages with translation to be reviewed: we will use the templates caR, esR or enR to indicate that a Catalan, Spanish or English translation should be reviewed, respectively. Please, follow the pattern below:
- Catalan translation to be reviewed: {{caR}}
- Spanish translation to be reviewed: {{esR}}
- English translation to be reviewed: {{enR}}
Pages with translation to be updated regarding the original version: we will use the templates caA, esA or enA to indicate that a Catalan, Spanish or English translation should be updated, respectively. The name of the page of the original version will be indicated by a parameter.
Please, follow the pattern below:
- Catalan translation to be updated: {{caA | origin=NOM}}
- Spanish translation to be updated: {{esA | origin=NOM}}
- English translation to be updated: {{enA | origin=NOM}}
Where NOM is replaced by the actual the name of the page.
For instance, if the Spanish translation of the page ¿Qué es un wiki? (es) being the Catalan version the original, we will write:
- {{esA | origin=Què és un wiki?}}
Using the "summary"
When editing a wiki article, below the main editing window there is a small text entry field labelled "Summary". If you tick revision or update marks in an article try to explain in this summary your reasons so they are used for guidance.
If you want to review one of these articles, you can see if who has ticked a mark has written any comments by reading the History of the article.
Do you want to translate?
There are some pages, as for instance the ones about the wiki interface, the presentation of the project or the partial reports that will be translated “officially”. But for the rest, the translation depends on those taking part on the project and on those willing to contribute.
If you want to help translating some pages, please check these lists of pages waiting to be translated:
Proofreading translations
If you want to proofread already translated articles that need to be updated or somebody has considered them to be in need of proofreading, please check these lists:
- Catalan translation to be proofread
- Spanish translation to be proofread
- English translation to be proofread
Do you want to see the wiki interface in another language?
As a registered user you can change the language that is used for the browsing elements and for the system messages of this wiki that are in Catalan by default.
Make sure you have login as registered user first. Once in at the right top part of the screen your user’s name and several links will appear. Follow the steps below:
- Click on the link "preferències"
- In the section "User Data" you will see a pop-down menu named "language" where you select the language you prefer.
- Once chosen, click on the button "desa preferències".
Remember that the system will only show the interface elements in the selected language when you login as registered user.
Bear in mind that this does not affect the contents of the wiki.
Automatic Translators
Find below a list of some automatic translators that can be useful for translating wiki contents that are not in your language. The idea is that you use this automatic translation for a personal use, to get an idea of what the text says.
Warning: If you want to use some of these translators as a resource to insert translated texts into the wiki, you should be familiar with both languages and review the automatic translated text afterwards since it is not always correct and sometimes there are mistakes. In any case, whenever you edit, please write in the "Summary" which translator you have used and asses if it is necessary to be proofread.
